Silversun Pickups

Indie rock outfit Silversun Pickups was formed in Los Angeles, California in 2005. The band soon became a fixture in L.A.’s eclectic Silver Lake music scene, the home base of hipster darlings like Rilo Kiley and Moving Units. The band’s initial lineup included Brian Aubert (guitar, vocals), Nikki Monniger (bass, background vocals), Kennedy (guitar), Christopher Guanlao (drums) and Joe Lester (keyboards), though Kennedy was asked to leave the band after setting lead singer Brian Aubert’s sweater on fire during one performance.

The band signed to indie label Dangerbird Records (Sea Wolf, La Rocca) in early 2005, and released their first EP Pikul later that year. Named after a friend of the band who had passed away years earlier, Pikul was notable for its experimental structure: the record begins with six standard length songs (including fan favorites "Kissing Families" and "Booksmart Devil"), but then continues with seventeen fast paced, unnamed songs that are each less than a minute long before ending the 24 song record with the five minute long "Sci-Fi Lullaby".

Based on the underground success of Pikul, Silversun Pickups released their first full-length album Carnavas in 2006, also on Dangerbird. A left-field success, the album sold a respectable 180,000 copies and has spawned two hits on the mainstream Billboard Hot Modern Rock Tracks chart, "Lazy Eye" and "Well Thought Out Twinkles". Another song from Carnavas, "Future Foe Scenarios", was released as a single in the United Kingdom.
