Girl Talk
All the girls - and boys - have been talking about Girl Talk lately. As an artist, Girl Talk (real name
Gregg Gillis
) doesn’t create his own music, instead using his laptop to cut, splice, and rearrange existing songs into original compositions. Once only known in independent music circles amongst other sampling artists like
Legion of Doom
and
Dsico
, Girl Talk’s quirky and dance-friendly mashups of catchy top-40 hits have begun to resonate in the ear of the mainstream listener.
Gregg Gillis, now 27, began rearranging pop music as Girl Talk back in 2000 while working on his engineering degree at
Case Western Reserve University
, releasing his first CD
Secret Diary
on indie sampling label
Illegal Art
(
The Bran Flakes
,
Oh Astro
) in 2002. He recorded another CD for the Illegal Art label (which rose to infamy in 1998 due to the legal frenzy surrounding a release called
Deconstructing Beck
, an album comprised solely of unauthorized
Beck
samples) in 2004,
Unstoppable
, releasing two EP’s on smaller independent labels that same year. Girl Talk’s popularity in his early years was not fueled by album sales, but rather by his wild and memorable stage antics - Gregg often stripped down completely naked during live performances, something he has toned down considerably as of late.
Now out of college and working as a biomedical engineer while juggling Girl Talk on the side, Gregg released his third album
Night Ripper
in mid-2006. Widely considered Girl Talk’s breakout album,
Night Ripper
marked Girl Talk’s transition from an underground to a more mixed-mainstream audience, with tracks like
"Smash Your Head"
(a mashup memorably mixing
Elton John’s
"Tiny Dancer"
and
The Notorious B.I.G.’s
" Juicy"
) and
"Bounce That"
(successfully pairing
LCD Soundsystem
with
Stevie Wonder
) leading
Night Ripper
to receive favorable reviews from the mainstream media, musical neophytes, and jaded hipsters alike. Based on the success and demand of his live act, Gregg quit his job in 2007 to concentrate on Girl Talk full time.
