G. Love & Special Sauce

G. Love & Special Sauce might sound like a cross between a sleazy pimp and a Big Mac, but it’s not quite that gross. It’s the name of an alternative hip-hop group from fronted by Philadelphia native Garrett "G. Love" Dutton, who formed the group with drummer Jefferey Clemens, bassist Jim Prescott, and pianist Mark Boyce after dropping out of college and moving to Boston in the early 1990’s. Their sound can best be described as a laid-back and bluesy form of acoustic hip-hop, sounding something like a cross between whiteboy hip-hop pioneers The Beastie Boys, blues legend Van Morrison, and Philly rock outfit The Dead Milkmen.

The band became the house band at a Cambridge, Massachusetts bar in 1993, independently releasing their own record while on tenure at the pub. Their hastily recorded demo album caught the attention of Sony-affiliated Okeh Records (Little Richard), who added G. Love & Special Sauce to their roster in 1994, releasing their self titled debut later that year. The album was a quick success, with singles "Cold Beverage" and "Baby’s Got Sauce" receiving respectable rotation across the airwaves. The band released two more albums on Okeh (1995’s Coast to Coast Motel, 1997’s Yeah, it’s that Easy) before departing the label, going on a temporary hiatus after their 1998 tour. Standout tracks from Coast to Coast Motel and Yeah, it’s That Easy include "Kiss and Tell", "Sugar Mama", and "I-76".

After leaving the Okeh imprint G. Love and the gang switched over to Sony’s 550 Records imprint, releasing their fourth album Philadelphonic in 1999 and their fifth record Electric Mile in 1999 and 2001, respectively. While Philadelphonic was an extension of the hip-hop-meets-soul sound the group started off with, Electric Mile added 1960’s-inspired funk disco, and psychedelic into the mix. Both albums were supported by heavy touring, with singles "Rodeo Clowns" and "Unified" becoming concert staples.
